Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent in the Roman Catholic Church.

What is Lent?

In basic terms, Lent is the season before Easter.  It lasts until the Mass of Holy Thursday.  The evening of Holy Thursday begins the The Easter Triduum, which lasts from Holy Thursday to the Evening Prayer of Easter Day. However, Lenten fasting and penance continue until the end of Holy Week, and all of Holy Week is included in the traditional 40 day Lenten fast, despite Lent ending liturgically on Holy Thursday. While Sundays are typically excluded from the Lenten fasting and abstinence restrictions, and are not numbered in the traditional "40 Days" of Lent, they are still part of the Lenten season, as can be seen from their Lenten themes.

The purpose of Lent is to be a season of fasting, self-denial, Christian growth, penitence, conversion, and simplicity. Lent, which comes from the Teutonic (Germanic) word for springtime, can be viewed as a spiritual spring cleaning: a time for taking spiritual inventory and then cleaning out those things which hinder our corporate and personal relationships with Jesus Christ and our service to him. Thus it is fitting that the season of Lent begin with a symbol of repentance: placing ashes mixed with oil on one's head or forehead. However, we must remember that our Lenten disciplines are supposed to ultimately transform our entire person: body, soul, and spirit. Our Lenten disciplines are supposed to help us become more like Christ. Eastern Christians call this process theosis, which St. Athanasius aptly describes as "becoming by grace what God is by nature."

There are a few basic tasks that traditionally have been associated with Lent. Many of these have a long history. These are fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. In addition, reading the Scriptures and the Church's Writings can help one grow during Lent. Let's look at each of these suggestions individually.

Fasting: The Western Rite of the Catholic Church requires its members age 18 to 59 to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, unless a physical condition prevents otherwise. This means only one full meal is permitted. The Fridays of Lent are days of required abstinence, meaning meat is not permitted. Abstinence is required of those age 14 and older. When we "give something up" for Lent, we are embracing a form of fasting, an excellent spiritual discipline. Some people choose to give up sins (gossip, drunkenness, etc) for Lent. In this way, Lent represents a spiritual training time to overcome evil. Pope St. Leo, for example, emphasized that fasting from wrath is required along with food. Some give up things they have an inordinate desire for, e.g. sweets, caffeine, etc. By giving these up, the person fasting learns to control a particular part of his or her life, which leads to greater self-discipline even when Lent is over. As such in Lent we are able to learn, examine, and get under control our material excesses. Lent is about spiritual results, not material ones.

Prayer: Lent is a good time to develop or strengthen a discipline of daily prayer. The Liturgy of the Hours, an ancient practice of praying throughout the day, is a good place to start. A good goal for Lent would be to read Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer everyday. If you already do that, perhaps you could add noon or night prayer (also called Compline). Contemplative prayer, based around the idea of silence or listening for God, is also well suited to Lent. There are also many excellent form prayers that reflect the penitential mood of Lent. We can also find many excellent prayers for Lent from the Scriptures. Praying the Rosary throughout Lent can be rewarding too. Theology and liturgy should always be prayer, so a good discipline for Lent would be to make an effort to attend worship services whenever possible. Daily mass would be very rewarding.

Almsgiving (Charity): While Lent is about giving something up (i.e. fasting), it is also about putting something positive in its place. The best way to remove vice is to cultivate virtue. Lent has been a traditional time of helping the poor and doing acts of charity and mercy. While as Christians this is a year round calling, Lent is a good time to examine ways to get involved and to make resolutions to actually do them. Giving alms can be done in more ways than just giving out money to people on the street. It can be done by helping your family, friends, and neighbors out of tight situations or being more generous to hired help. However, one of the best ways to give alms is to get out of your comfort zone a little bit, maybe by volunteering for a charity or a shelter. There are many lay religious orders, which devote much of their time to charity. Lent is a perfect time to discern a call to these or any other ministry.

Scripture Reading: When facing temptation in the desert, Jesus relied on Scripture to counter the wiles of the devil. It is a formidable weapon for us as well.

HAPPY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK!

Catholic Schools Week began in 1974 and is an annual national celebration of the important role that Catholic Schools across the country play in providing a values-added education for America's young people.  Catholic schools are proud of their educational network that emphasizes intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical, and social values in their students.

This is a time for us to celebrate the enduring value of Catholic education and focus on the gift that it provides to our children.  During Catholic Schools Week we reach out to the community to build awareness of what our school offers.  And we thank all those who work hard every day to make our school excellent:  students, families, faculty, staff, volunteers, and, of course, our Pastor.

One of the most important roles of families is preparing young people for fulfilling lives of love and service to their families, their communities, and the Lord.  That is why the 2010 Catholic Schools Week theme is particularly fitting.

"CATHOLIC SCHOOLS:  DIVIDENDS FOR LIFE"

underscores the long-standing tradition of Catholic education to instill in students the faith, knowledge, morals, and discipline that will enable them to fulfill their future roles in life.  Now, more than ever, a Catholic education is truly an investment in the future that is worth the consideration of every family.

Help us spread the word of the wonderful works of our Catholic school by telling your friends and neighbors...ask them to consider investing in their child's future by providing them with a Catholic education.  As you already know, they will not regret it!

Happy Catholic Schools Week!

These bags are complete with a Thanksgiving meal inside including a Publix or Winn Dixie gift card for the families use.

On behalf of Fr. Greer, Fr. Jorge, Fr. Bastien, myself, and the faculty and staff of our school, we wish you a most Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving!

O God, when I have food,
help me to remember the hungry;

When I have work,
help me to remember the jobless;
When I have a home,
help me to remember those who have no home at all;
When I am without pain,
help me to remember those who suffer,
And remembering,
help me to destroy my complacency;
bestir my compassion,
and be concerned enough to help;
By word and deed,
those who cry out for what we take for granted.
Amen.

A Child's Prayer for Grandparents
Dear God, please bless my grandparents.
Thank you for the life they gave my parents
and for the life they give to me.

For the ways they helped me and made me strong, I give thanks.
For the ways they love me no matter what, I rejoice.
For the ways they have paved the road
that leads me here, I am grateful.

Let them grow in wisdom and joy in life.
Let them find peace and rest from their work.
Let them be healed of every sickness and pain.
And let them see with their own eyes
the glory of your Son, Jesus,
in the love of their children and grandchildren.

Bless them always until they come to rest in you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Parents, for the safety of our children, I ask that you sit on the right hand side of the Church (as you face the Altar) - the side closest to the Blessed Sacrament ONLY.  Please do not approach our children before, during, or after the Mass.  This is a time of prayer for them.

I thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Also, remember that we have our Sunday Family Liturgies on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 10:30 AM.  The next one is October 11th.

I know that this year is going to be one in which our students will succeed because we will all be working together for their benefit.

Our Home and School Association is ready to go as is the Development Committee.  We can look forward to many great things this year!

Each Tuesday we have our weekly all school Mass at 8:30 AM.

Please consider joining us for Mass!

Remember to have your child bring a stewardship offering with him/her to school.

Our ushers have been trained and will be serving us at Mass each week.

In an effort to teach future generations about the importance of taking care of the needs of our church, our school will be implementing a Time, Talent & Treasure educational component.

 We will be introducing stewardship as a way of life for the children.  They have been eager and interested observers of the adult efforts and many of our young people already practice stewardship as part of their family’s commitment.

Our program will be implemented as follows:

1.     We will train school ushers who will serve at our school Tuesday Masses.

2.     A weekly collection will be taken at each Mass.  The purpose of this exercise will be to educate our children and teach them about the generous giving of ourselves.

3.     At the weekly collection, the students may place money, which is to come from their own allowance, birthday money, etc.  We do not want for the parents to have to put the money in for them.  This is again to teach them that God is very generous to us and as such we have a responsibility to give back to Him.

4.     Students may also place a “note” stating a kind deed or any way that they have shared of him or herself during the week along with their money or in lieu of their money.  For example, a student may place a note in the basket that states, “I helped my Mother do the dishes”.

Thank you for your generosity of heart in supporting this effort to help our children care for our Church and be good stewards of God’s gifts.

Please be prompt in picking up your child and do not try to engage the teacher in an on the spot conference as he/she is responsible for the rest of the students in his/her charge.  Thank you in advance.
